Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy FAQS

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a treatment that boosts the body’s natural healing process through the inhalation of 100% oxygen inside a full-body chamber. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a well-established treatment for decompression sickness, serious infections, and air bubbles in the bloodstream. It is also effective in treating wounds that won’t heal as a result of diabetes or radiation.

Normally, oxygen is transported throughout the body by red blood cells. However, in the conditions of the oxygen chamber, oxygen is dissolved into all of the body’s fluids – this includes plasma, nervous system fluids, the lymph, and even the bone.

Through this process, oxygen reaches places where circulation is blocked. This distribution of oxygen to vital areas enhances white blood cell activity, boosting the body’s ability to heal itself.

The most common side effect is barotrauma to the ears and sinuses. This is caused by the change in pressure. To minimize the risk of barotrauma, tubes may be inserted into the ’s ears. Patients will also learn techniques to equalize the pressure in their ears. Rarely, do clients experience changes in vision during and after the treatment period. These changes are minor and typically do not last long.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is performed in a clear acrylic oxygen chamber, which allows our staff to closely monitor the clients and to allow them to see outside.

While inhaling oxygen in the chamber, they may watch a movie, listen to music, or simply rest, remembering to fill their lungs up completely with each breath.

According to the Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Committee, many conditions are effectively treated with hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Aside from the conditions mentioned in the previous section, hyperbaric oxygen therapy is appropriate in treating conditions caused by carbon monoxide poisoning, in treating intravenous gas bubbles, and in treating clostridial myonecrosis, also known as “gas gangrene.”

Any condition that affects the body’s tissues will benefit from hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

Other conditions addressed by hyperbaric oxygen therapy include Alzheimer’s, cerebral palsy, migraine headaches, traumatic brain injury, stroke, and sports injuries.

Aside from these conditions, the therapy promotes general wellness and body function.
